Monica Vitti left her mark in the history of cinema, and helped transform Italian culture by bringing revolutionary female characters to life. Contemporanea paid homage to the timeless icon by hosting a special screening of Red Desert, introduced by Vitti’s biographer Cristina Borsatti.

A screening series showcasing the best in contemporary art-house cinema: award-winning films from the international film festival circuit and new discoveries are selected by our curatorial team, to be premiered in Italy. Screenings are accompanied by in-depth conversations with the authors.

Parallel Visions

An exhibition, curated by Giulia Magno, exploring the intersections between cinema and the visual arts by bringing five works from contemporary women artists into dialogue with the classics which inspired them: Godard, Bergman, Pasolini, Tarkovsky, Powell and Pressburger.

Sguardi Doc

Sguardi Doc provides a snapshot of the best nonfiction filmmaking from Italy, showcasing documentaries by cutting-edge filmmakers such as Francesca Mazzoleni, Chiara Marotta, Agnese Giovanardi, and Luciana Fabbri.

International Competition

A platform for new talent, the International Competition showcases short films from emerging women filmmakers from around the world. The winners are selected by a jury of six film industry professionals, critics and filmmakers.

The Many Faces of Franca Valeri

A talk celebrating Italian cinema giant Franca Valeri, hosted by her long-standing friend and collaborator Emiliana Palmieri. Presented in collaboration with Rai Teche and the Italian National Film Archive, the event will feature a live performance by actress Demetra Bellina.

Artist Talk: Irene Dionisio

Italian visual artist Irene Dionisio presents ​Il mio unico crimine è vedere chiaro nella notte, a moving image installation which addresses the issues of censorship in Italian cinema and psychological removal in art. 

Green Screen

Director of CinemAmbiente Festival Gaetano Capizzi discusses environmental sustainability in the motion picture industry, identifying values and principles that could be applied by any film organization. The event features a screening of award-winning documentary Haulout.

Cine-pioneers: Dorothy Arzner

A talk, curated by Vladimir Luxuria, celebrating pioneering filmmaker Dorothy Arzner. With twenty feature credits to her name, Arzner is the most prolific female director of the male-dominated Golden Age. Renowned as a star-maker of up-and-coming actresses, she directed Katharine Hepburn and Lucille Ball in breakout roles.

Please Mind the Gap

A panel examining the deficit of women behind the camera in the European film industry and beyond. Marta Rocchi (University of Bologna) and Domizia De Rosa (Women In Film, Television and Media Italia) joins Eleonora Giovanardi (Amleta) in conversation about the key barriers and opportunities for women filmmakers.

The Right to Count

Creating space for women to thrive in their career paths in the STEM industry is critical to unlocking ground-breaking innovation and delivering the advances society needs. This expert panel hosted by Donne 4.0 addresses the challenge of eliminating gender bias from STEM, entrepreneurial and digital disciplines.

Ukraine in Focus

Ukrainian filmmaker Daryna Snizhko discusses her documentary Another Night, which provides a dramatic and intimate look inside the Russian assault on Kharkiv. The director joins historian Marcella Filippa in conversation with Olena Zamiatina, Chair of International Relations at the University of Kiev.
